Faith Dismuke Brings #TrackGirlMagic To The SPRINT DREAMS BOOK COVER

The hashtag #TrackGirlMagic was coined by black female track and field athletes who showcased their love of track and field with images and videos of practices, medals and overall sisterhood in the sport. The college-set novel, SPRINT DREAMS, written by former professional track and field athlete, Faith Dismuke, brings #trackgirlmagic to book shelves starting with the eye-catching front cover. Powerful legs, a defined core, and a pair sprinter spikes set the tone for the college-set sports story announced to release June 1, 2020.

SPRINT DREAMS tells the story of eighteen-year-old Makeda Delane who is determined to compete with the best of collegiate track and field. However, a move from the comfort of her inner city historically black university to a rural university leaves the Jamaican-American athlete in an emotional mess. If Makeda does not get a hold of her careless decisions, her All-American dreams will be in jeopardy. This story is one of self-love, acceptance and growth. It brings the female athlete and college black girl experiences to #ownvoice literature.

Similar fiction stories have been released with book covers showcasing female characters within the African diaspora including Patina by Jason Reynolds, JACKPOT by Nic Stone, Finding Yvonne by Brandy Colbert and The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo. However, few stories represent the collegiate athlete experience. Moreover, few covers are bold enough to emphasize the beauty, grace, and strength of the female athletic body. The SPRINT DREAMS cover, designed by former collegiate track and field athlete and graphic designer, AJWILLDESIGN, captures readers’ attention with a single glance. Like the story, the cover is realistic and a little edgy.

A 2018 study from Morgan State University explored racism and sexism in female sports. Many of those obstacles reign true today. SPRINT DREAMS comes during a time when black female athletes struggle to balance embracing their physical gifts while maintaining and combating the pressures of meeting mainstream beauty standards and hypersexualization. With competition seasons and major sporting events like the Summer Tokyo 2020 Olympics being cancelled or postponed due to COVID19, athletes, including female athletes, have fewer opportunities to showcase their competitive drive and accomplishments. The SPRINT DREAMS book cover alone is a reminder for talented and strong athletes that their bodies are worth acknowledging, not because of sexual appeal but because they are the physical representation of their dreams, goals, ambitions and success.
